Fantastic essay. Hope you can help Gen Z break out of their bubbles. The first step of subverting subversion is noticing the subversion around you ;)

My daughter asked for flannel shirts in middle school. I thought it was just a fashion trend. Wow 🤦‍♀️

As they covered in my GSA... A lot of people think it's just "the style," but those people are actually committing "cultural appropriation."

For most of us, it probably is just fashion, but unfortunately, some believe they can gatekeep these things. I'm sure they had a niche cultural meaning at some point, but it's really not logically productive to try and stop others from buying an item publically available at, like, any store. Forgive me if that statement is controversial.

I think that my daughter was attempting to identify with the LGBTQ+ crowd at her school in order to be accepted. I didn't know that flannel and certain colors were signals of identity. She also wanted to cut her hair super short & shave the sides of her head. I set a limit with the haircut, although we did dye it various colors. I am glad that I set limits because she has grown into herself, her strong, confident, feminine self.

How can I watch this? Would love for my step daughter to see this. She grew up believing she was ugly because only one boy told her she was beautiful. In actuality she could have been a model.

Jr high and high school boys were terrified to look or even show interest in a girl - I’m angry she didn’t grow up normally. But was afraid to speak her mind, give any opinions. At least boys were braver to ask her out in college.
